Brown spots on the face can be the result of a number of causes. They can be freckles, the small flat brown marks so often seen in light skinned people. Freckles will become darker in the summer and fade in the winter. The brown spots can be due to hormones especially during pregnancy, leaving a large patch of brown on the face. And more often than not these brown spots appear on the face as a result of over exposure to the sun.
The sun induced brown discolorations are medically known as solar lentigines. They appear as melanin in the skin over produces color and deposits extra color in a concentrated area. Solar lentigines are harmless and treatment is not needed. However, since brown patches of discoloration are often associated as a sign of aging due to sun damage, treatments to remove the spots are sought out.
Treatments to remove brown spots range from over the counter at home remedies to laser removal. Topical bleaching creams are very helpful in fading or eliminating the spots. Hydroquinone, azelaic or kojic acid work well, when diligently applied per instructions, however it can often take 6 months or more for dramatic results to be observed. Chemical peels will remove the upper layer of skin to decrease pigmentation. Chemical peels vary in strength which will determine the number of treatments and the effectiveness.
Microdermabrasion is another excellent way to eradicate the brown spots. Procedures will buff away the upper layers of skin, to remove sun damaged age spots, initiate new cell growth and stimulate collagen. At least 8 weekly treatments are required initially to see the maximum benefit with maintenance treatments to keep the results. The most effective removal method for brown spots on the face is laser. Lasers will use wavelengths of light energy to eradicate the hyperpigmentation. A series of treatments may be required for best effects. |
