A liver spot is a darkened patch on the face, neck, chest, back of hands or arms caused by excessive sun exposure. They are often considered one of the 5 major signs of aging. As the skin ages and has more exposure to sunlight, the spots become more pronounced and increase in number. Mostly benign, liver spots do not require treatment however those who have them want them gone.
Treatments to remove or decrease the pigment of the liver spots include topical bleaching creams, microdermabrasion, some chemical peels and laser treatments. Several sessions for each treatment are needed to eradicate the spots. A dermatologist or skin care specialist should be consulted prior to any treatment to remove liver spots. Any spots that have appeared recently, changed in color, size or texture need to be reviewed immediately. |
