Liver spots are brown freckly marks that appear on the face, neck, chest, arms and back of hands. Liver spots are not caused by problems or issues with the liver, but by over exposure of these areas to the sun. As the skin ages it becomes susceptible to an overproduction of melanin deposits in concentrated areas within the skin. More often than not these spots are of no danger and don’t require treatment. Those who have the darkened spots deem them synonymous with aging and want the reminder of that gone.
Treatments available to remove liver spots include laser therapy, microdermabrasion, chemical peels and topical bleaching or retinoid creams. Often several treatments are required for the most desirable results. Refraining from sun exposure and wearing protective clothing and sunscreens high in SPF will sustain treatment results and deter new spots from forming. |
